Our REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates) program started yesterday, and, given the times, it’s gone virtual. Some projects have had to change, there’s different logistics to think about – it promises to be a fun learning experience for all. To keep the community spirit of the on-site REU, our program organizers have been hard at work creating a schedule and activities for the students to participate in.
Along with a colleague (Nick aka @SeascapeScience), I’ve been pulling together a series of “lectures” we’re calling Summer of Data. The idea is to provide the students with some information and resources they can use as a jumping block into the world of computing-based scientific research. We’ve settled on the following sessions:
- Reproducible Research
- Coding Tools: GUIs, interactive notebooks, Git/GitHub
- Introduction to R
- Experimental Design and Unconscious Bias
- Data visualization: what makes a good figure?
- Data Repositories
- High Performance Computing Infrastructure
We’ll also have some articles and videos for discussion topics covering, for example, algorithm bias, data privacy, and big data.
First session is tomorrow morning.
