Summer of Data

Our REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates) program started yesterday, and, given the times, it’s gone virtual. Some projects have had to change, there’s different logistics to think about – it promises to be a fun learning experience for all. To keep the community spirit of the on-site REU, our program organizers have been hard at work creating a schedule and activities for the students to participate in.

Along with a colleague (Nick aka @SeascapeScience), I’ve been pulling together a series of “lectures” we’re calling Summer of Data. The idea is to provide the students with some information and resources they can use as a jumping block into the world of computing-based scientific research. We’ve settled on the following sessions:

  1. Reproducible Research
  2. Coding Tools: GUIs, interactive notebooks, Git/GitHub
  3. Introduction to R
  4. Experimental Design and Unconscious Bias
  5. Data visualization: what makes a good figure?
  6. Data Repositories
  7. High Performance Computing Infrastructure

We’ll also have some articles and videos for discussion topics covering, for example, algorithm bias, data privacy, and big data.

First session is tomorrow morning.
